BPL Photorejuvenation
What is BPL Photorejuvenation At Burgundy Skin & Beauty?
BPL stands for Broadband Pulsed Light, an advanced light-based treatment designed to target pigmentation, sun damage, redness, visible vessels and uneven skin tone. Controlled pulses of broad-spectrum light are delivered into the skin and absorbed by specific targets, such as excess pigment or blood vessels. This allows us to treat particular skin concerns while leaving the surrounding tissue largely unaffected, helping to create a clearer, brighter and more even-looking complexion. It's ideal when your skin doesn't need aggressive resurfacing but would benefit from a fresher, more radiant look.
Treatment Time: TBC
Treatment Areas: Face. Ideal for sun damage, age spots, freckles, uneven pigmentation, redness, broken capillaries and signs of photo-ageing.
How BPL Photorejuvenation Works
BPL delivers controlled pulses of light into the skin. When treating pigmentation, the light energy is absorbed by excess melanin, and the targeted pigment may temporarily darken before gradually fading or naturally shedding. When treating redness and visible vessels, the light is absorbed by haemoglobin within the blood vessels, helping to reduce the appearance of unwanted redness over time. Your therapist selects different filters and treatment settings depending on the concern being treated and your individual skin.

Most clients describe the sensation as a quick, warm flick or a light snapping feeling against the skin. You may also feel some warmth during and immediately after treatment. Your treatment settings are carefully selected according to your skin type, concern and comfort level.
-
This varies from person to person. For the best results, we often recommend a course of treatments, particularly for established pigmentation, sun damage or vascular concerns. Treatments are generally spaced around 3–4 weeks apart, depending on your skin, the area being treated and the concern we're targeting. Following your consultation, your Burgundy therapist will create a treatment plan specifically for your skin, and once you're happy with your results, occasional maintenance treatments may be recommended.
-
Downtime is generally minimal, but it depends on the concern being treated and the intensity of your treatment. Immediately afterwards, you may notice mild redness or flushing, warmth, slight sensitivity, temporary mild swelling and darkening of any treated pigmentation. When pigmentation is treated, it's a normal part of the process for it to look darker or slightly speckled before it gradually fades over the following days.
-
Some clients notice their skin looking brighter and clearer after their first treatment, but results are progressive. Pigmentation can take several days to begin fading after initially darkening, while redness and vascular concerns may gradually become less noticeable. Results depend on the concern being treated, its severity and how your individual skin responds. BPL can help improve the appearance of existing pigmentation, but it can't stop your skin producing new pigmentation in future, as sun exposure, hormones, genetics and natural ageing all play a part. Consistent SPF, good homecare and occasional maintenance treatments can help maintain your results.
-
No. BPL isn't suitable for every skin type or every client. Because the technology works by targeting pigment within the skin, your natural skin tone, any current tan, recent sun exposure, medications and medical history all need to be considered. That's why a consultation and skin assessment are essential before you begin treatment.
-
BPL shouldn't be performed on actively tanned or recently sun-exposed skin, and this includes both natural and artificial tanning. Your therapist will advise you on the right period of sun avoidance before and after your treatment. It's also why BPL is particularly popular during the autumn and winter months, when UV exposure is generally easier to manage.
-
Before your appointment, we recommend avoiding tanning and excessive sun exposure, wearing SPF daily and avoiding other intensive skin treatments unless approved by your therapist. Please let us know about any medications or supplements you're taking, along with any changes to your health, and follow any specific skincare instructions given at your consultation. Certain active skincare ingredients may need to be paused before treatment, and your therapist will advise you individually.
-
Absolutely. Daily broad-spectrum, high-factor SPF is an essential part of your BPL programme, particularly when treating pigmentation and sun damage. UV exposure can contribute to pigmentation returning and can increase the risk of complications with light-based treatments.
-
Yes. BPL can form part of a wider skin programme and may be alternated with treatments such as OxyGlow, LED, RF skin tightening, professional peels and other advanced facials where appropriate. We'll advise you on the right combination and spacing for your individual skin
